The great Levon Helm died today. I made this photograph of him in his studio in Woodstock a few years ago for Rolling Stone magazine. It was a foggy day, we walked down to the pond on his property, and while his black dog ran around the trees, he played me a song. It was cold so we ran back to his studio. I photographed him playing solo on his drums, he gave us some hot chocolate and we talked about Hurricane Katrina. He smoked KT up so much I had to do all the driving back to NYC.
Just look at that face. Rest...peace, good sir.
Proud to have seen him play in 2009.
